This collection includes a two-page handwritten letter from Andrew Jackson to George Graham. The letter is dated May 13, 1817 and is noted as being written from the Division of the South headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee. A typed transcription is also included.

Abstract

This collection contains the transcription of a letter written to President James Monroe by General Andrew Jackson in January of 1815. The document contains Jackson's description of the Battle of New Orleans, including Jackson's narrative timeline, the number of dead and wounded (on both sides), and atmosphere of the battle. The original letter was written in 1815, but it is unknown when this copy was transcribed.

Abstract This receipt lists the medicines that General Andrew Jackson purchased from Dr. M. Allen for his slaves and their children. Jackson has penned Marathon across the top, indicating that he was in Marathon, Alabama at the time. The medicines listed are Feb. gutta (a fever drop), Tinct Muria Ferri (a cure for erysipelas), Pulv. Rhei (a laxative), and Cort. Peruv. (Peruvian bark used to cure childbed fever). This circular, entitled Appeal to the People of Tennessee, begins with a brief history of Tennessee's recent history that leads to Johnson announcing his appointment as military governor of the state. Within this role, he invites the citizens to support his government appointments until an election can be held, and promises amnesty for all who yield to the authority of the national government. He assures them that there will be no vindictive prosecutions.

This collection consists of two documents signed by Andrew Johnson, then Governor of Tennessee, in 1863 and 1864. The first certificate appoints Thomas J. Cypert Captain in the Regiment of Union Guards of Tennessee Volunteers, and the second appoints James M. Moore First Lieutenant of Company A in the Second Regiment of the Mounted Infantry of Tennessee.
